Plot Summary
The Avengers raid a Hydra base in Sokovia commanded by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, who has been experimenting on humans using Loki's scepter. They retrieve the scepter and also discover that Strucker had been conducting experiments with the orphan twins Pietro Maximoff, who has super speed, and Wanda Maximoff, who can control minds and project energy.
Tony Stark discovers an artificial intelligence in the scepter and convinces Bruce Banner to secretly help him to transfer it to his Ultron defense system. However, the Ultron program becomes sentient and decides that it is necessary to annihilate mankind in order to save the planet. It attacks the Avengers and flees to Sokovia with the scepter. It builds an armature for self-protection and robots for his army and teams up with the twins, who hold Stark responsible for their parents' deaths.
The Avengers go to Clint Barton's house to recover, but out of the blue, Nick Fury arrives and convinces them to fight against Ultron. They track him down to Seoul, where he is trying to use the scepter's gem to create a synthetic human body for himself. They manage to capture the body but are confronted by Ultron and the twins. Wanda abandons Ultron after discovering his plan to destroy humanity with a meteor made from Sokovia's landmass. The Avengers take the body back to their headquarters and upload J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark's loyal A.I., into it. The resulting being is called Vision, who joins forces with the Avengers.
The final battle takes place in Sokovia, where Ultron has activated his machine to lift a large part of the city skyward. The Avengers fight against Ultron's army while Fury arrives in a Helicarrier with Maria Hill, James Rhodes and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to evacuate civilians. Pietro dies when he shields Barton from gunfire. A grieving Wanda abandons her post to destroy Ultron's primary body in revenge, which allows one of his drones to activate the machine. The city plummets but Stark and Thor overload the machine and shatter the landmass. Hulk rescues Romanoff from falling debris and then flees in a Quinjet while being pursued by Ultron's drone. Vision confronts Ultron's last remaining body and destroys it.
Reception
Avengers: Age of Ultron received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2015 and the eighth-highest-grossing film of all time. It received praise for its action sequences, visual effects, humor, and performances, especially those of Downey, Ruffalo, Evans, Johansson, Spader, and Bettany. However, it also received some criticism for its pacing, story, villain, and lack of character development.
